Paraguay is a landlocked South American country shaped by the Paraguay and Paraná river systems, the fertile east and the Chaco. Guaraní language and food culture remain central to national identity.
Cassava, maize, beans, peanuts, squash, fruit, dairy, meat and river fish contribute to familiar meals. Chipa and other maize- or cassava-based foods illustrate how local staples can remain culturally important while recipes and portions adapt to present health needs.
Large commodity production can generate national income without guaranteeing varied, affordable diets for every household. Smallholder support, local markets, water, storage and procurement of pulses, fruit and vegetables are essential complements.
Sweetened drinks, packaged snacks and refined convenience products increasingly compete with home-prepared foods. Tereré made without added sugar can support hydration; sweetened ready-to-drink versions are metabolically different.
