Chile stretches from the Atacama through Mediterranean valleys to Patagonia, with the Andes running along its eastern edge and the Pacific shaping fisheries and trade. Food policy must recognize Indigenous, rural, coastal and urban differences.
Potatoes, maize, legumes, fruit, vegetables, seafood, dairy and grains contribute to regional diets. Mapuche food knowledge, Andean northern crops, central-valley horticulture and southern potato diversity are important cultural and agricultural assets.
Chile became internationally prominent for front-of-package warning labels, restrictions on marketing to children and school-related measures aimed at products high in sugar, sodium, saturated fat or calories. These policies do not solve diet quality alone, but they make the food environment easier to understand and provide evidence for other countries.
Sugary beverages, packaged snacks, refined baked products and fast food can displace minimally processed meals. The response should combine labeling with affordable healthy food, water access, school meals, urban planning and primary-care screening.
