Uruguay’s food system reflects grassland livestock, dairy, grains, horticulture, Atlantic fisheries and a highly urban population. Meat is prominent, but diet quality depends on the full pattern: vegetables, fruit, legumes, grains, beverages, processing and portion size.
Mate, shared meals and grilled foods are important social practices. They need not be framed as health problems. A metabolically stronger plate gives substantial space to vegetables, beans and other fiber-rich foods and treats sugary drinks and ultra-processed snacks as occasional rather than routine.
Convenience, marketing and price can make packaged foods easier to obtain than minimally processed alternatives. Policies should support clear labeling, healthy school environments, safe water and affordable produce.
An aging population increases the importance of preventing hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver and loss of functional independence. Primary care can identify risk before complications appear.
