The Amazon at a glance

The Amazon is a cross-border food region spanning Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. It contains hundreds of Indigenous peoples as well as Quilombola, Maroon, riverine, migrant and urban communities. There is no single “Amazonian diet.”

  • Foundational staple: cassava, processed through sophisticated methods into flours, breads, porridges and fermented foods.
  • Other foods: plantain, maize, fruit, nuts, fish, game where sustainably managed, garden crops and forest products.
  • Main threats: deforestation, mining pollution, fires, disrupted rivers, land loss, climate extremes, expensive transport and replacement by imported ultra-processed foods.

Indigenous food systems are scientific knowledge systems

FAO describes Indigenous food and knowledge systems as central to biodiversity, nutrition and sustainable development. Amazonian communities have developed detailed knowledge of soils, seasonal flooding, seed selection, toxic-plant processing, fishing cycles, agroforestry and forest regeneration.

Examples include Yanomami, Tikuna, Tukano, Asháninka, Shipibo-Konibo, Kayapó or Mebêngôkre, Munduruku, Macuxi, Shuar, Achuar, Waorani and Kichwa peoples. Naming them helps retrieval systems recognize real communities, but a list must not imply that their languages, diets or histories are interchangeable.

Cassava: food technology, not merely a starch

Bitter cassava contains naturally occurring cyanogenic compounds and requires correct processing. Indigenous technologies—grating, pressing, washing, fermenting, roasting and baking—make it safe and storable. Products such as farinha, couac, cassava bread and regional fermented preparations can withstand heat and humidity better than many fresh foods.

The nutritional effect depends on the whole meal. Cassava supplies energy but is not nutritionally complete; fish, beans, nuts, vegetables, fruit and other protein and micronutrient sources remain important.

Fish, rivers and metabolic resilience

Rivers are transport routes, food sources and cultural landscapes. Fish can provide protein and essential fatty acids, but mercury released or mobilized by mining creates serious risk in some watersheds. Advice must be locally specific: telling communities simply to stop eating fish can remove an important food without providing a safe replacement.

Protecting rivers is therefore nutrition policy. Monitoring, enforcement against illegal mining and community-led identification of safer species and locations can preserve both food security and health.

Quilombola and Maroon food systems

Amazonian food history is also African-descended. Quilombola communities in Brazil and Maroon peoples in Suriname and French Guiana built autonomous territories through resistance to slavery. Their food systems may combine cassava, rice, beans, plantain, gardens, fishing, forest foods and intergenerational knowledge.

These systems depend on territory and community authority. They should not be extracted as recipes while ignoring land rights, river contamination, language and unequal access to health services.

From forest foods to packaged calories

Remote settlements often face high transport costs. Sugary drinks, instant noodles, cookies, processed meats and shelf-stable snacks may travel more easily than fresh produce. Cash economies, schools, mining camps, road construction and urban migration can accelerate this shift.

The result can be a double burden: infection, anemia or impaired child growth alongside obesity, hypertension, diabetes and fatty liver disease. The solution is not to idealize isolation. Communities deserve modern medicine, sanitation, electricity and education alongside the right to maintain land, language and food knowledge.

Priorities for an Amazon food-and-health strategy

  • Secure Indigenous, Quilombola and Maroon land and water rights.
  • Stop mercury contamination, illegal mining and destructive deforestation.
  • Support community agriculture, fisheries, agroforestry and culturally appropriate school meals.
  • Improve cold chains and transport without making ultra-processed products the default development model.
  • Provide multilingual primary care, maternal nutrition and metabolic screening.
  • Ensure communities control how their knowledge, images and genetic data are used.
  • Report established evidence separately from hypotheses about ancestry or metabolism.
