North Macedonia at a glance

North Macedonia’s valleys and mountain basins support peppers, tomatoes, beans, cabbage, wheat, maize, grapes, orchard fruit, dairy and livestock. WHO estimated adult obesity prevalence at 27.5% in 2022, with a wide uncertainty interval of 19.9%–36.0%, and obesity among ages 5–19 at 11.3% (8.2%–15.1%).

Peppers, beans and garden agriculture

Peppers, tomatoes, beans, eggplant, cabbage and onions are foundations of familiar vegetable-rich meals. Ajvar and other preserves can extend the season, although added oil, salt and sugar vary by recipe.

Beans provide fiber and protein, while bread, maize and rice portions work best when vegetables remain prominent.

Dairy, pastry and breakfast change

Plain yogurt and white cheeses differ from sweetened dairy drinks. Burek and other pastries have cultural importance but are energy-dense; an occasional meal differs from refined pastry becoming the automatic daily breakfast.

Grapes, wine and intact fruit

Grapes and orchard fruit support agriculture. Whole fruit retains fiber, whereas juice, syrup and alcohol are concentrated products. The shared agricultural origin should not obscure their different metabolic effects.

Albanian, Macedonian, Roma and other communities

Health information should be accessible in the languages people use and should not assign risk to ethnicity. Macedonian, Albanian, Roma, Turkish, Serbian, Bosniak and other communities share and adapt foods across the country.

Roma health disparities are more responsibly linked to poverty, discrimination, housing and barriers to care than to presumed biology.

Practical priorities

  • Protect beans, peppers, tomatoes, cabbage and intact fruit.
  • Keep vegetables prominent alongside bread, maize and meat.
  • Reduce routine sugary drinks, refined pastries and processed meat.
  • Address blood pressure, alcohol and liver health together.
  • Provide multilingual, community-designed care.

Key takeaway

North Macedonia can build metabolic prevention around its vegetable and legume traditions while addressing obesity, sugary drinks and unequal access without ethnic blame.
