Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: farming, fisheries, volcanic recovery and metabolic health

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines links fertile volcanic agriculture on Saint Vincent with fishing and smaller-island food systems across the Grenadines. Dasheen, yam, sweet potato, plantain, bananas, vegetables, fruit, legumes and fish provide a strong foundation for nutritious local meals.

At a glance

  • Overweight and obesity: PAHO estimates 61.5% among people aged 15 and older in 2022.
  • Diabetes: estimated prevalence increased from 8.2% in 2000 to 10.6% in 2014.
  • Hypertension: reported adult prevalence was 23.3% in 2015.

La Soufrière and food-system recovery

The 2021 eruption of La Soufrière displaced more than 13,000 people and caused major agricultural and forestry losses. Volcanic ash, hurricanes and transport disruption show why recovery must protect planting material, soil, water, fisheries, storage and routes connecting producers with communities.

Promising local action

FAO-supported school-feeding work connects fishers and local agriculture with children’s meals. In 2026, a climate-smart hydroponic demonstration facility was established to expand protected leafy-green production and local technical capacity. These efforts can improve food security while reducing dependence on imported sugary drinks and ultra-processed snacks.
