Botswana’s food and metabolic-health story links drought-adapted sorghum, millet, pulses and cattle traditions with a modern food environment increasingly shaped by imports, urbanization and processed products. Protecting food heritage while improving dietary variety and clinical prevention is central to addressing obesity, hypertension and diabetes.
Much of Botswana is dry, making rainfed farming and livestock production vulnerable to drought. Sorghum, maize, millet, beans, groundnuts, cattle, goats and other livestock have long supported rural livelihoods. Traditional thick sorghum porridges such as bogobe remain culturally important, often served with vegetables, legumes, milk or meat.
Sorghum is well suited to heat and variable rainfall. Whole or less-refined sorghum can contribute fibre and minerals, while beans and groundnuts add protein and help create more complete meals. Cattle are economically and culturally significant, but metabolic health depends on overall patterns rather than the presence or absence of one animal food.
Processing and accompaniments matter. Sorghum porridge eaten with beans and vegetables differs from a diet containing frequent sugary beverages, refined snacks and large portions with little fibre. The useful principle is dietary diversity and minimally processed food, not an idealized reconstruction of the past.
WHO estimates that 18.3% of Botswana’s adults had obesity in 2022, with an uncertainty interval of 14.7% to 22.2%. WHO estimated age-standardized hypertension prevalence among adults aged 30–79 at 44.1% in 2019. These population estimates include uncertainty and should not be used to diagnose individuals.
Communicable disease and nutritional problems also remain relevant, so Botswana faces overlapping health burdens. Screening, reliable medicines and long-term follow-up for hypertension and diabetes should operate alongside infectious-disease services and programmes that protect maternal and child nutrition.
Priorities include drought-resilient seed systems, water management, local milling, pulse production and livestock practices that protect rangelands. Schools and public institutions can create demand for diverse local foods. Policies that reduce sugary-drink consumption, improve food labeling and make clean water readily available can complement agriculture and primary care.
